That “Long good-bye” became a final one on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 29th, 2026.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Sydney; her children, Iain (Jenn), Donna (Brett); grandchildren, Jordan, Sofia and Rylan; her remaining sister Flora and many nieces nephews and friends.
Born in Inverurie, Scotland on March 23, 1945 to parents Donald and Janet McLeod (Hamilton) ; sister to Margaret, Jenny, Anne, Flora and Donald.
Barbara received a teaching certificate, got married and immigrated to Canada with her husband all within one week in 1966 at the age of 21.
First landing in High River, Alberta where she worked as a school teacher. After one too many cold winters she later settled in Victoria, BC to teach and raise a family, becoming an official Canadian Citizen in 1974.
Barbara loved to teach , guiding children in her community for over 35 years. She loved kids. This was never more evident than when she had her own children and grandchildren whom she cherished fiercely.
Barbara was the most kind , patient, generous, and fun loving person that we had the pleasure to call ours. Her sense of humour was sharp. She was firm but fair , intelligent and even feisty when it was warranted. Her guidance was freeing in a way that let you choose your own path without comment or judgment, never demanding of your time, just there , steady and supportive. Cheerleading every adventure.
Fast forward a few years and she had a front row seat to her grandkids and she never once missed taking that chair. She showed up every chance she got for everything and was truly present.
We knew she”d make the BEST Grama; she excelled.
We are all so grateful for her influence in our lives.
There will be no service at her request but if you wish to honour her memory- sit quietly and read a book, listen to the birds, garden; plant something beautiful (preferably purple), enjoy the beach, really look around you and notice simple things, let your self laugh, go for a walk , show up for a child and teach them something and do it all with kindness and without complaint – for this was Barbara.
There is a void now that cannot be filled but we will spend each day looking for your beautiful soul in the small, wondrous things that you found so much joy in and we will smile.
Until we meet again ❤️
