Wayne Harold Wright

Wayne Harold Wright

On Monday, May 4, 2026, Wayne Harold Wright passed away at 87 years after a long battle with cancer. He leaves behind his soulmate & wife of over 60 years, Grevyne, son Sean, brother Jack (Marie), sister-in-law Debbie and numerous nieces & nephews. Predeceased by his youngest brother, Bob (Debbie). Wayne formed Wayne H. Wright Architects Ltd. in 1966 in Edmonton, Alberta. Some of his firm’s most notable projects are: the Civic Centre in Fort McMurray, Keyano College Performing Arts Center, Oil Sands Interpretive Center, all in Fort McMurray. Other projects his firm completed include the first building, Project One, Athabasca University, the Consul General of Japan’s residence in Edmonton, and the IPL Building and Master Plan at the Banff Center. His other interests include family weekends at their Shuswap Lake cottage, piloting his Cessna 182 to Brandon, Manitoba and Fort McMurray, Alberta, racing his #128 Formula Ford at Speedway Park Racetrack in Edmonton. In 1990, Wayne and Grevyne retired to Victoria, BC, where they designed and built their home on Pender Island in 1998. Here, he took to cruising/racing his CS26 sailboat throughout the Gulf Islands (including two Swiftsures). He expressed his love of all forms of wildlife and family pets in his watercolor & acrylic paintings. Monday morning chess with John Gowan kept his mind alert. Friday would see him golfing 9 holes at Cordova Bay’s the Ridge with “the Fab Four”. Thanks to all of his caregivers & friends who enabled him to be able to say “No Regrets”, particularly Dr. John Faul on Pender Island, who supported and encouraged Wayne through his weekly Tuesday phone call health check-ups. Now, I suspect he can be found outside the Pearly Gates, reunited with all our family pets, having a Nespresso, and watching over my family on the big blue ball in space! In lieu of flowers, a donation to the BC Cancer Institute or your favorite charity would be appreciated.
