Linton Douglas Read, a much loved educator in Belleville, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2020 in Sidney BC at the age of 94 years. Linton was predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years Geraldine (nee Foley) and is survived by daughters Jane Stevens and Judith Oliphant (Paul). Linton had four grandchildren Josh (Ruby), Kathleen, Benjamin, Samuel and 3 great grandchildren Dominique, Amiyah and Audrey. Born in Hamilton in June 1925 to parents Jenny and William Read, Linton graduated from McMaster University (1947) and attended Ontario Teacher’s College that year. Having met the love of his life at “Mac” Linton married and then began his teaching career in September 1948 in English and French studies at Belleville Collegiate Institute. With leadership and dedication, Linton went through steps in department head and Vice Principalship to become a Principal at both Moira, and Bayside Secondary Schools from which he retired in 1982. Imparting knowledge to students, assisting in their yearly musical productions and supporting their athletic endeavours and social development was something that Linton embraced and excelled at. He was truly in his element during these interactions with students and colleagues. Linton And Gerry were charter members of Eastminster United Church and contributed greatly to the life, ministry and music of Eastminster over the years. Linton was also a very involved community participant serving on the board of the Belleville Public Library, the Children’s Aid Society, Three Oaks Society, and Serenity House. He was an active Rotary Club Member and later in life helped start the Belleville chapter of Probus Club. After losing Gerry in March 2017, Linton took the brave step of leaving his friends at Quinte Gardens and his Belleville home of 69 years to move to Sidney BC to be closer to his children and grandchildren. His life there was full of family visits, new friends and wonderful caregivers. So many felt his heart-filled spirit and he will be dearly missed each day. We his family, all feel so blessed to have had his loving life force steady us for 94 years. In keeping with the undying generosity of Linton and Gerry, and if so moved, please donate to your favourite charity in their memory.
