Ronny Hock Guan Quay

Ronny Hock Guan Quay

Ronny Hock Guan Quay

May 7, 1946 – August 15, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family of Ronny Hock Guan Quay announces his passing.

Ronny was born on May 7, 1946, in Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo, to Tommy Chor San Quay and Chwee Kim Quay, both of whom predeceased him. He was the second son in a family of ten children.

At just 20 years old, Ronny left East Malaysia on June 6, 1966, to begin a new chapter of his life in Canada. He arrived in North Saanich, British Columbia, on June 10, 1966, a place that would become an important part of his life and the home where he would eventually raise his family.

Ronny worked for many years in horticulture, agriculture, and forestry, putting to use his natural connection with the land and the outdoors. That connection was also evident at home, where he took great pride in creating and tending beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.

He was also an accomplished and enthusiastic cook. Family and friends will fondly remember his delicious curries and the many other dishes he prepared and shared. Food was one of the many ways Ronny brought people together and showed that he cared.

Throughout his life, Ronny had a strong interest in martial arts and believed in contributing to his community. He also volunteered with the Saanichton Police, generously giving his time to help others.
Those who knew Ronny will remember a man who was quiet, caring, helpful, and possessed of a wonderful sense of humour. He did not need to be the loudest person in the room to make his presence felt. His kindness, humour, and willingness to help others spoke for him.

Above all else, Ronny loved his family. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren and took great joy in watching their lives unfold.

Ronny leaves behind his three children with Lorena Magsalin: Edgar Quay (Krista), Charity Quay (Oliver), and Andrew Quay.
He was a proud and loving grandfather to Charles Rogers, Sophia Rogers, Thomas Rogers, and Ayla Gammon.
Ronny is also survived by his siblings Sunny, Benny, Julia, Jefri, Johnny, Anna, Fiona, Diana, and Philip, along with his extended family and the many friends whose lives he touched over the years.

From his beginnings in Miri, Borneo, to the life and family he built in British Columbia, Ronny’s journey was a remarkable one. His family will remember the gardens he lovingly tended, the meals he prepared, his quiet humour and kindness, and, most of all, the pride and love he had for those closest to him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Ronny’s Celebration of Life will be held on September 19th, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Ronny’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.

I remember Ronny from when I was a teenager. He was the handsome guy who married Lorena, one of our church members. He was always friendly and helpful. He sang at my wedding reception. I will always remember that! He will be well remembered by those who knew him. I am extending condolences to his children and grandchildren and to his siblings and their families.

Our sincere condolences for your loss; when meeting Ron in our SDA church I remember his kind demeanour and soft speaking, good manners and often talking about his love for gardening . May God keep all of you his children in his care and with the hope that one day you will see your father again.
